There are specific challenges for first time Western travellers to India, especially females. These including packing clothes that fully cover one’s legs and arms, and carrying only essential items in your day pack, including a scarf for visiting temples and spare toilet paper. It also pays to keep the most important things like money and camera, which you may need to whip out quickly and easily, hidden away from public view in a money belt or bag.

I traveled to India for the first time in November 2010 for eight days. I traveled as part of an organized tour with Intrepid Travel, so my experiences are based on traveling with a full back pack every second day, and a day pack and smaller hidden money bag every day.

What to Pack to Wear

India is a predominantly Hindu culture so females dress conservatively. In addition, white western travellers will always draw attention so whilst it’s impossible to fully blend in, minimize attention by packing tops and shirts that are modest and at least cover the arms to the elbows. Don’t worry about being too hot during the day, especially if traveling between the cooler months of November to March. Long cotton shifts or kaftans are ideal.

Likewise, long cotton skirts or harem pants are perfect for India. They are cool enough for any time of day, and help to keep the mosquitoes off your legs after dusk. Bear in mind that many toilets in India are of the squat variety so you’ll also need to be able to easily pitch them up.

Tops, skirts, and pants are readily available and so cheap to buy at any street stall or marketplace in India so it’s not essential to take every skirt in your wardrobe from home with you.

I got by on a single pair of sandals for the entire eight days that I was in India. I’d taken trainers with me also but they didn’t even make it out of my back pack. Sandals are useful when visiting mosques and temples, as they are quick and easy to slip on and off. It’s mostly warm in India so your feet will appreciate being able to breath. When it rains, sandals are quick to dry.

What to Carry in Your Day Pack

Your day pack will contain all the items that you want to easily and quickly access without having to root around in your main back pack. On the days that we were based in one place, our back packs stayed at the hotel, whilst we carried only our day packs and money bags on day trips.

The first essential item for a day pack is a lock. Pick pockets abound in India apparently, although no-one in our group had any experiences with them. We did however, hear of other tourists having bags snatched. A combination lock is best because it doesn’t involve having to find a key. A locked day pack means that one can happily walk around with it on their back without having to worry about someone fiddling with it from behind.

You will undoubtedly go into your day pack 50 times in a day, and whilst it can be a pain to continuously be locking and unlocking the bag every time you reach for a tissue, drink bottle, or hand sanitizer, it’s worth it for piece of mind.

The essential items to carry in a day pack should include the following:

• Scarf for visiting temples and Moslem mosques, although many mosques and temples will supply them for visitors,
• Cold or flu medication that can stop a runny nose,
• Hay Fever medication if prone to hay fever,
• Toilet paper or tissues as most toilets in India are squat style,
• Hand sanitizer or Wet Wipes for before meals or after handling money,
• Insect repellent for mosquitoes at dusk,
• Tampons as not always readily available,
• Neurofen or Panadol for headaches,
• Money. I split my available cash between my money belt and my day pack,
• Water bottle,
• Important documents e.g. Passport, flight ticket, travel insurance, vaccination documents,
• Fan for days when you are on a coach, bus, or train,
• Packets of lollies for days when traveling on coach or train,
• Small guide book, as many of the tourist sights in India including the Taj Mahal, don’t have information leaflets readily available,
• Small, foldable umbrella.

All possible medication that you might need should be bought to India including the obvious ones for diarrhea and constipation. Many of the same medication may be available in India but are unlikely to be branded the same.

What to Carry in Your Money Belt

Under my top, I carried by money bag around my neck and over one shoulder so the bag itself hung down to my waist. Others in our group had traditional money belts that sat around the waist which some tucked into the top part of their pants.

I carried in it half of my available cash, my mobile phone, my camera, and a couple of tissues. Obviously, one’s mobile phone is optional but I had children back home so liked to have it close. My camera was a small digital one so it fit nicely into my money bag. It’s not generally advised to be too snap happy because cameras do tend to single out travellers as potential targets for thieves.

What to Pack for India

After a couple of days in India, most people reach a happy medium between what they consider essential to carry around with them during the day, and what they can leave in their hotel rooms. Medication should be bought to India but other items such as clothing can be just as easily purchased in India. A combination lock for a day pack and for one’s main back pack or suitcase is also essential. Patience and a smile are also helpful.

Travel Magazine has been informed there has been an increase in Package Holiday bookings this year compared to last year even though we are still in a trick economic climate. High Street Travel agents such as First Choice and Thomas Cook are celebrating after people looking for Holiday Deals in September helped increase bookings this year by 75% compared to booking for holidays last September.
